One event in one of the books will set off many smaller events that persist throughout the next few.įor the most part, the setting is grounded in reality, with a lot of real life economic applications and realistic situations. The story is episodic, but certain elements of the setting link together to create a cohesive world. They usually exploit it and end up profiting off of it, all while getting closer to Holo’s homeland. With a few exceptions, each book deals with Holo and Lawrence traveling to a new town and experiencing the economic turmoil there. The journey is more important here though, as seeing their relationship slowly progress meaningfully each book is very satisfying. It’s not hard to say that in the beginning they both despise each other, yet it’s very obvious where their relationship will end up. This is also a romance story, so there is clear, but slow progression between Lawrence and Holo throughout their journeys. The economic information is always presented with a new story in each town that Lawrence visits and this makes it intriguing to learn about since it’s always relevant to the plot. If that sounds boring, don’t worry because it’s actually very interesting. While the initial premise of Spice and Wolf makes it seem like an adventure story, the books capitalize greatly on Lawrence being a merchant and actually heavily deal with medieval economics. She no longer feels respected by the village, and decides to travel with Lawrence for the time being, looking for her homeland. Turns out this girl, Holo, has wolf ears and a wolf tail since she is actually the harvest goddess of a village that grows wheat. Spice and Wolf is about a traveling merchant named Lawrence who one day finds a beautiful girl in his cart. In that regard, Spice and Wolf by Isuna Hasekura and illustrated by Jyuu Ayakura is a completed romance story. Continuing the trend of my last two posts being about romances, this week’s post is another romance! I also have to say that I technically haven’t finished this series since it is technically still ongoing, but there is an ending and an epilogue, which I have read through, and anything that is still being released are just short stories (and there’s also a sequel series, but that’s a different story altogether), so it is very unlikely that there will be any major developments. Well, it’s about time I did something to make the “more” part of my tagline true.
